EVERYONE has the gift of music in them. They just need an opportunity such as music lessons to "open" their gift.
ALL AGES can learn to play an instrument. There are appropriate ages for starting different instruments due to the size of the instrument and the physical needs required of the student. There are also instruments that have very little physical demands so even elderly people can learn to play.
Everyone progresses at their own rate. Learning a musical instrument is a personal thing and not a challenge or competition.
Children who are enrolled in too many after school activities, don't get the full benefits of any one of those activities. A child needs time to be able to totally focus and enjoy one activity at a time to truly reap the benefits. Parents can ensure that their child is not enrolled in too many activities that can cause a child to become stressed. This goes for adults too. Pick one activity at a time if you want to see results and enjoy yourself along the way.
Physical impairments should not deter or eliminate anyone from learning to play a musical instrument. Music can always be adapted for fingering etc. to accommodate any student.
A degree in music and/or a degree in education is only a piece of paper. A true qualified teacher, is one who can pass their knowledge and passion successfully to another person.
Not all music teachers are performers.
Not all performers are teachers.
All the above points are written from my personal experiences. Being a music teacher for over 30 years and retail store owner with a staff of ten music teachers for 15 years, I experienced a lot. I speak from the heart and really believe in what I say here. I have had music teachers with degrees in music and education and they turned out to be the worst teachers I had. They could play, but did not have the ability to "teach" effectively.
I have had children fall asleep at the piano as they are playing and when I ask them why they are so tired, they say they have so many things they are doing: swimming, skating, cubs, karate, soccer, hockey, gymnastics, brownies, birthday parties, sleepovers, homework, etc. etc. etc...
It bothers me to see this happening to children. Let them pick what they want to do (limit the number of activities) and let them enjoy what they have chosen!
