What Is A Classic Vocal Lesson?

What is a classic vocal lesson? It is lesson in which you take instruction with regard to singing in the classical style. In order to fully understand how this lesson would be carried out and what it would consist of, you should try to understand what the classical style of singing entails. When people speak about the concept of classical singing, they are referring to someone who is trained as what is known as a 'straight singer'. This person has the ability to sing in front of people without
needing a microphone in order to do so. They also have a voice that is very versatile and can take on the big classical genres such as opera and musical theatre styles of singing.
In your classical voice lessons, you will learn all about projection and how to make your voice sound full and round. You will also learn about something called 'the break'. This is the point at which your voice cannot reach the next note in the series that you are singing. You will get taught how to sing over that break as well, so that you can continue to hit high notes when you are performing and not risk the embarrassment of your voice breaking.
Some other great techniques taught in classical lessons
  • Make sure that your voice and body are warm before you start singing. At the beginning of your lesson, your teacher will give you all of the techniques needed in order to make sure that you are sufficiently warm and can properly exercise your voice.
  • Relaxation. The next part of a classical voice lesson is, of course, the relaxation aspect that you will be taught. If you have any tension in your voice, you will have to make sure that you are relaxed before attempting to hit any notes.
  • Note theory. In classical singing, you will have to learn how to read notes and music. One of your first lessons will be about reading music and how each of the notes sound when they are being sung as opposed to when they are being played. You will also learn how to keep pitch with a piano.
  • Scales. These are an integral part of any voice lesson and you will get lots of practice going up and down the scales in major and minor keys.
  • Song practice. You will then, of course, choose songs - mostly of the classical genre - and practice singing those. Sometimes you will learn them in sections, other times all in one go depending on how your teacher chooses to teach you a specific song.
Remember that if you take your voice lessons seriously, you will be able to go quite far in your singing career and also have a great time learning. There is a lot of enjoyment and achievement that can be had from classical singing.
