As a professional music instructor, a question I get a lot is
"what kind of keyboard should I buy". Well, the answer to this question
depends on what you are looking for in a keyboard. Like with cars,
people look for different things when they are looking to buy a
keyboard.
One of the things you will want to consider is size. A normal full size piano is 88 keys, so ideally you will want an 88 keyboard. The downside to the 88 full size keyboard is that they can be quite large, heavy, and tend to be more expensive. Most beginners will not use all 88 keys, so a smaller size keyboard may suffice if budget and space are a concern. It is recommended that you buy a keyboard with at least 60 keys at minimum.
Another aspect to consider pertaining to the keys of the keyboard, is whether or not the keys are weighted. Weighted keys are much closer to the feel of a real piano when compared to non-weighted keys. Once again, keep in mind that keyboards with weighted keys tend to weigh and cost a lot more
.
Accessories are an important consideration as well. Keep in mind that you will definitely want a foot pedal, some kind of music stand, and a bench to sit on. If the keyboard comes with those things, that is a major plus. If not, you can usually acquire them at a relatively low expense. Remember to think how the music will come out of the keyboard.
Does the keyboard have built in speakers? If not, you will have to make sure you have speakers or an amplifier to play the sound from the keyboard. You need to make sure that the inputs and outputs are compatible on each device. For example, if you get a keyboard with 1/4 inch guitar outputs, you need an amplifier or speakers which have 1/4 inch inputs. If you have what is known as XLR inputs which are much more thick and have three prongs on the connector; remember to make sure that the speakers have the same kind of input.
Lastly, you want to consider how much you want to spend on a keyboard. Again like cars, there are low end, mid range, and high end keyboards. Casio is a common brand for lower end keyboard. These may be better suited for kids, as they are not expensive and do not have excessive features that kids won't understand how to use. A mid range keyboard would be a Yamaha keyboard. A high end keyboard might be a Roland or a Kurzweil. A mid range keyboard may be suitable for a young adult, or adult who is looking to dabble in playing the piano as a hobby. Obviously, those looking to become high level professional musicians should get a high end keyboard. So to recap, you want to consider keyboard size, the weight of the keys, accessories, how the sound is produced, connections, and price.
