So You Want To Learn Guitar, Huh?

In this article, I'm going to discuss what it takes to actually learn how to play the guitar. I'm going to talk about not only the mental aspects but also the discipline required and how you should proceed to learn. Many people say they want to learn how to play the guitar. However, in my experience, too many of them seem to think that there's some kind of magic to the process-where not much effort needs to be put in. Truth is, a lot of effort is required!
But don't be afraid of that...
What I mean is that a lot of time needs to be spent studying and practicing, and what makes the difference between whether it seems like work or not is in the degree of how much you love it. If you love it, it will actually seem as though the instrument is calling you to practice each and every day. It will be a labor of love and not feel like work or drudgery.
Some people want to learn how to read music and others just want to learn to play by ear. I wanted to learn both! So, I learned to read guitar music by invested a lot of time studying guitar books written by the legendary Mel Bay and practicing for many hours a day. Learning music theory will actually help you to learn how to play by ear by teaching you what to listen for when learning a song without the sheet music.
In the beginning, make sure you learn the basics, such as how to tune the guitar properly; how to hold your hands, especially for playing chords; how to pick properly; the notes up to the 12th fret on all strings; and all of the basic 'open' chords-chords that contain at least one open string and therefore can only be played in one location-majors, minors, and the various '7th' chords. These things can be learned from beginner books, courses or videos. Just don't try to do fancy things such as tapping like Eddie Van Halen before you learn the basics.
Another important thing to decide has to do with style. There are two basic styles of guitar-picking and fingerstyle. If you want to become good at either one, you have to practice that particular style. The required skills are completely different for each one.
To conclude, I'd like to say that learning to play the guitar is very rewarding. Whether you plan on just playing for family and friends or even if you plan on being a world famous rock star!
So, get a guitar, pick it up, get a good beginner's book or course, take lessons (expensive), or get together with a friend who can get you started with the basics, and just begin. Once you learn, it will always be a part of you and you will love it forever! Happy strumming!
If you want to learn to play the guitar, here is a great course that's very informative, effective, and above all-fun! Check out this amazing course here.
