5 Things You Probably Don't Know About Lefty Frizzell

While Lefty Frizzell is one of the most widely recognized country singers in history, not many people are familiar with his story, or even his music. While Lefty's music did belong to a bygone era, he has been the inspiration for many different singer songwriters, including Willie Nelson and Randy Travis to name a few, and has even inspired several songs. From humble beginnings in Central East Texas, to a record contract with Columbia and dozens of songs that hit the top 10 billboard charts. Here are five things you probably never knew about Lefty Frizzell.
1.
Texas Roots
Lefty was born in a quaint little town by the name of Corsicana, just southeast of the Dallas Metroplex. Although Lefty's family relocated to Arkansas shortly after his birth, it is undeniable that his start in a small Texas town was a crucial part of his development as a country singer. It was clear, when Lefty picked up the guitar before he was even 12 years old that he would return to Texas to make it big in the country music scene.
2. Started Performing at Age 12
While it is unclear exactly when Lefty took up the guitar, by the age of twelve he was already regularly appearing as musical accompaniment on a local radio children's show. After earning his chops in this venue, his family moved back to Corsicana. It was here that he gained true fame as a singer after he took first place in a Dallas talent contest. Throughout his teen years, Lefty would continue to perform at fairgrounds and rodeos on nights and weekends, while toiling alongside his father in the oilfields during the day. However, this trend would not last long. Within a few years, Lefty would get the break of a lifetime playing on a local Texas radio station.
3. A Unique and Soulful Approach to Vocals
Playing all of those shows in small towns around Texas allowed Frizzell plenty of time to perfect his singing voice. Although he did have to work in the oilfields for sometime, he soon had enough work performing in honky tonk nightclubs to give up his day job and focus solely on music. By age 19, Lefty's easy-going singing style had grown to such renown, that he was given his own half-hour slot on a local radio station's evening program.
4. Record Contract with Columbia Records
It was inevitable that Lefty would receive a record contract. And indeed, while playing a show at the Ace of Clubs in Big Spring, Texas, he caught the ear of Columbia Records producer Don Law, who signed him immediately. Many notable country singers of today, including Randy Travis, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard all point to Lefty Frizzell as one of their greatest inspirations.
5. Winner of Multiple Awards
Throughout his career, Frizzell earned numerous awards for his music. The first of which came with an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in 1950. He won his first Grammy Award for the song "Saginaw, Michigan" in 1964, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame by 1972. A song you may have heard "If You've Got the Money I've Got the Time" earned Lefty a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Unfortunately, Lefty did not live long enough to see the event, but he was posthumously added into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
