When an artist has the sustainability to last for over 40 years
there are many things that give her credibility. In talking about her
various awards I think it's important to discuss what made them
noteworthy.
In 1983 Cyndi released her first solo album titled She's So Unusual. It became a worldwide hit and was the first female album to chart four singles from the same album to the top-five on Billboard's Hot 100 list. The album earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist.
Those four singles were "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through The Night." At this time music videos were in the early stages of development. By choosing good directors and giving them her input, her videos were exceptionally well done. In 1984 the video for Girls won for the Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards show.
In terms of Cyndi's body of work let me start by saying that Cyndi is a great story teller. In
writing or co-writing with another artist she gives a lot of thought to the verses in her songs and that gives much meaning to the story.
There's a little personal favoritism on my part here, as I just love to listen to native New York folks talk. Their accent is infectious. She was born and raised in Queens. So when she tells a story I cannot help but be enthused by it.
The story behind "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" is this. Cyndi wanted the music to be uplifting and told the musicians that she wanted a mix of Reggae and Motown style music. The focus is relevant to young girls who are developing their interest in boys. They are driving their parents crazy because of coming home late at night and partying. Of course the parents think the girls are going to get in trouble. Instead of people believing that they are up to no good, the song is saying 'lighten up'. They are just a bunch of girls going through a stage where yes, sometimes they do silly things. But the reality is they just want to go out and have a fun time.
Sometimes songs and videos want to imitate people having fun. However they fall short in lyrical content and are not realistic. The story in 'Girls' is real and masterfully told by the singer and videographer.
The "Time After Time" song story was co-written with Rob Hyman and certified Gold by the RIAA. Its popularity shines bright as it has been recorded by over 100 artists.
It's a song that was raved about by many media critics including Rolling Stone and MTV as one of the best love songs of all time. The video for the song shows real life experiences of the ups and downs in a relationship. And in each of them the classic line is uttered "If you fall I will catch you time after time."
In my opinion this video has a story of what true love is and is told beautifully by Cyndi and the other actors in it.
Her 1989 album Memphis Blues was Billboard's most successful blues album of the year staying on the chart for 13 consecutive weeks. Let's be realistic how many pop artists can really sing the blues. Cyndi can and stated in an interview that most of the music that we know of starting in the 50's and on had its origin in the Blues. How right she was!
Another music venue that gives her bragging rights is that she wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway play Kinky Boots which led the 2013 Tony awards with six awards including one for her Best Musical Score.
Cyndi has been on several TV shows and had a recurring role on the sitcom Mad About You. She won an Emmy for her work in the series.
One of her proudest achievements is her activism for the gay rights movement. She has been an LGBT rights supporter for equality for over 20 years.
In 2010 her True Colors Fund launched the Give a Damn campaign to encourage the straight and gay community to stand together against discrimination of LGBT people, and to highlight the problems that LGBT students face in school from verbal and physical bullying.
She was also responsible for getting the Hate Crimes Prevention Act passed which included assault based solely on an individual's sexual orientation as a hate crime.
In 2012 she started the Forty to None Project after learning that 40% of LGBT youth are homeless.
Her charitable work knows no bounds. She also worked with the We Are The World project to combat famine in Africa.
So much can be written about Cyndi's many accomplishments and awards and her tireless efforts as an activist for noteworthy causes. And who could ever forget that four-octave voice range of hers and the ability to sing so many genre styles of music. Could we ever forget that great, eclectic fashion sense of hers?
In closing I can only say that there are two words that sum it up so well about this multi-talented lady singer and those words are Honesty and Interesting.
Honesty is because she believes passionately in herself about the quality of her work. And Interesting because when asked a question she answers the question directly, no BS or SPIN from this woman. She doesn't just give the assumed answer to anything. Look at any of her video interviews and you can't wait to hear what she has to say next.

I'm Paul Romaine and the host of http://SingersandMusiciansTalentSearchRadio.com.
Our philosophy is to have a venue where singers and musicians can
showcase their work. Rather than just having one winner from all of the
applicants, there will be many applicants that get to have their winning
song placed on the Talent Page tab of the site.
