Are you a fan of any of the singing talent shows such as The
Voice, The Idol, or Got Talent? When we watch these shows, we get to see
the evolution of a star right before our eyes. We see how an "ordinary"
person with a normal life changes into a superstar instantly. The
problem is that we do not get to see how much work and dedication this
normal person has invested and is investing every day to reach this
point. The reality programs rarely depict the singer's endless vocal
routines, hours of practice, sweat and frustration on the way to a
perfect performance. Instead, we are led to believe that
becoming a good singer is a matter of a few short weeks without much work.
The truth is that becoming better at anything takes time and dedication. Let's look at good athletes - they spend never-ending hours training, drilling, exercising, and strengthening to improve their performance and skills. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky or Steffi Graff dedicated their lives to becoming the best in their "art". The same applies for singers. Many aspiring singers believe that having talent is all it takes to become a good singer. Being talented surely helps but does not grant good vocal techniques, mature musicality or developed singing skills.
I can hear you saying "Practice sounds boring and exhausting!" The word practice is often associated with the idea of dull exercises. Let's replace the word practice with fun and passion. Singing should be about fun. If you are not having fun singing, then your goal of becoming a better singer may be short-lived. The good news is that if you feel a passion for singing, the process of getting better will be fun. The passion gives you energy to do more and more, and to do things better and more creatively. Your passion will make you want to discover, learn and improve.
The truth is that sometimes we need to work on aspects of singing that we do not feel passionate about or that frustrate us. The solution is to take it one small step at a time. For example, if your goal is to extend your vocal range, work on a note that is only a half-note higher than the last note that you can sing comfortably. Spend five to ten minutes trying to produce it with a better and more resonating voice using different exercises. Then move on to something that you love doing - maybe practicing your favourite song. Spend a little time every day tackling this skill. The progress that you experience is the motor for doing more and more. Benjamin Franklin said: "Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning."
In summary, find your passion and nourish it. Your passion will help you improve your singing voice fast because you will want to spend more time practicing, singing and improving. Happy singing!
