Music Instruction: Tips on How to Properly Strum A Guitar

If you are really enthusiastic about creating lovable music through your guitar, you should understand the significance of having a smooth, steady, consistent and relaxed strum. Before attempting to become skilled at learning any songs or chords, you need to get familiar with the technicalities of strumming, and then concentrate on the rest of the things without getting so much disturbed about strumming. Of course, you should be prepared to have a lot of patience and time to practice a lot.
Appropriate strumming techniques

The most important factor for achieving a superior strum is to have a loose wrist, along with a controlled motion. An absolute control over your elbow is essential for getting the perfect rhythm. While strumming, as far as possible, you should try to create all the movement from your elbow, and not the wrist. You may practice it by putting your guitar down and gently strumming the air up and down, as if playing your guitar. Focus on maintaining the wrist very loose and flowing, and starting all the motion from the elbow. Practice using your elbow for strumming forward downwards and upwards. Let the hand move naturally, along with the movement of your forearm, as if your wrist had no muscles.
Once you believe you got used to that motion, it is recommended to try it on the guitar. Now, pick up your guitar, ensuring that it is already tuned, and hold it properly. If you so desire, you may employ a pick, but ensure that it is held appropriately, as already described in last lesson. Next, without using your left hand for anything at all, or forming any chords, try giving a good downward strum to your guitar according to the technique you already practiced in the air.
Experience how the strings relent naturally, while allowing the wrist to travel slowly in a natural manner. Simultaneously let your hand to softly act in response to the vigor of the strike against the string. As you slightly increase your speed and force through the elbow, you will realize that you can form a good clean strum. The less your strum stabs through the strings, the lighter, smoother and cleaner will be the delivered sound. Practice this a few times, using different levels of power and speeds.
Finally, you should attempt an upward strumming a few times, followed by alternating. As you begin to feel comfortable, strike your feet to a stable beat and strive for a rhythmic strumming to that beat, starting with downward motions, followed by alternating strums, initially upwards and then downwards.
Practice this technique regularly for a minimum of five minutes, while watching TV, 'till you become used to it. After that, you are prepared to begin the process of learning chords.
