music: Here We Are Now, Entertain Us

Back at the end of 1991 popular music was rocked, literally, by the emergence of Nirvana, whose most famous song serves as the title and direction for this article. Those who remember the song will remember these lyrics. The music industry was turned on its head by the band's leader, and then in less than 3 short years later his head was gone, by his own hand. Why did he do this?
I don't want to make this article all about some dead rock star, but what happened during that time tells a lot about how people rely so much on what is happening outside themselves, instead of
looking inside, where it matters the most. This is where entertainment plays a huge role in one's life and if they are not careful, it can run their lives, which can be pretty scary.
I met a person when I was staying at a hotel who told me that he loves watching college football, and that 'his' team means everything to him. He even went as far as to say that the months when there was no college football were depressing for him. I have also heard of people joining in on riots when their team made it to the final match of the hockey season. They would trash the city streets, all in the name of the team winning the game. I think it is fine for one to be proud and to cheer and support a football or a hockey team, but to take it that far so that it consumes you is quite another matter. I've never been into sports much personally, but I can see the appeal of it all, the camaraderie with your mates; a good time and lots of fun, right?
Getting back to the dead rock star, the person who died did not enjoy his life, and felt that every time he went on stage he was punching in a time card before he stepped out. He became a victim of his own success. The people who loved his music spent so much time idolizing the man that they became obsessed with everything about him and in this way siphoned much of his energy, through continual thought projections towards him. This goes the same for some of the football fans, or movie actor fans, it is all about absorbing the fan's five senses with stuff going on outside them.
If you look back decades before the 1990s there were other musicians who also had a huge influence on the music culture, but their lives were cut short, either by themselves or under mysterious circumstances. History repeats itself, why? It is all about entangling the mass consumers with stuff that is not actually really important in the grand scheme of things, or long lasting. Music is fine as is football and hockey, but like Bhudda said, always choose the middle path. Take things in moderation and you will be entertained.
