music The Clash - "Give 'Em Enough Rope" Doesn't Get Enough Credit

Punk rock is really hit or miss sometimes, and no album is more evident than the Clash's second record. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" was supposed to be a huge record for the mighty punkers, but when they chose Sandy Pearlman for the producer, things seemed to shift a little and the punk rock community let the band have it. Despite groans and gripes from fans, the band went
ahead and still made the record and it is quite the achievement, even if it didn't have the immediate impact that their first or subsequent records after this one had.
The first thing that music fans will notice is how clean sounding the record is. There is no harsh tones, rips, or pops that were present in their early work, and some call the production too much. The maturity of the recording seemed to be a polar opposite for the band, and some listeners find it hard to enjoy the cleaner, more pristine sound, especially since it is classified as "punk."
The ten tracks still manage to pack a good punch, and while the source material isn't as raw as their contemporaries of the same time, the songs still have that punk ethos that made punk an interesting genre to begin with. Some of the best tracks on this record include "English Civil War," "Tommy Gun" and "Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad." The band flows through the record and while it seems a bit disjointed towards the end, the tracks still create a flow that can be heard over and over again.
The record was released in 1978, and was met with mixed reviews. Over the years, however, the band's legacy has over shadowed their missteps and long time fans look at this record with fond memories. It is not as memorable as "Combat Rock," but in a career as long as the Clash had, maybe that's OK, not every album has to shake the world and sell so well. The song writing team of Jones and Strummer do a great job making a solid record, and the production values are top notch, for the era.
The Clash's "Give 'Em Enough Rope" creates a new sound for the band, while keeping them firmly placed in the punk rock genre. Over time, the record has gained a solid fan base, and even the most jaded of listener can appreciate the work that went into putting the ten tracks together, especially after reading into the story of the band and how this release came to be.
