How to Play Drums: The Skills That You Will Need to Learn

Learning a musical instrument is very important for the development of a child. One of the best instruments to learn how to play is the drums. Even if you were not fortunate enough to learn how to play a musical instrument at an early age, you can take the opportunity now during a gap year.
Learning to play the drums does require some skills. If you want to master the art of playing the drums, you will need to go for lessons. During these lessons you will be taught the valuable skills that you need in order to pursue this instrument. Now that you are finished with school and have time to pursue a musical instrument, you should definitely consider taking a gap year. Instead of
throwing yourself straight into a degree, take the time to do something for yourself. A gap year is the perfect time to figure out what you might like to do as a career. Once you have started to learn how to play the drums, you might be drawn to the idea of starting a career in the music industry.
These are the first steps that you will be taught when learning how to play the drums during your gap year:
  • Counting. Drumming requires concentration with regard to counting. The basic drum beat is 4 counts. From there, it will become more intense as you start to improve your skills.

  • Figuring out the dominant hand. You will have a dominant hand, although both hands are used to play drums. The dominant hand will be the one that keeps the beat. As you progress, you might get involved with a band or orchestra. The drummer is responsible for keeping the beat and subsequently making sure that the rest of the instruments stay on time.

  • Stick control. Now that you have figured out how to keep the 4 count beat, you will need to practice your stick control. In order to maintain the rhythm, you will need to have an understanding of what you need to do with your drumsticks. At the beginning, you will practice drum rudiments, which will become the foundation that you will base the rest of your drum skills on. A drum rudiment is a pattern or exercise that will help to build the limb independence and creativity. It will basically increase the drumstick speed and control.

  • Creativity. When you have mastered the basics, you will soon be able to let your creativity take over. It will obviously take some time, but soon creating the groove and mood will become like second nature.
What is important to remember when learning how to play any musical instrument is that "practice makes perfect". Even if you are not naturally musically gifted you can still learn how to play a musical instrument - including the drums! All that you need to have is plenty of determination and patience.
