How Music Works - A Beginner's Lesson

Introduction to how music works
Most people love listening to music. It can certainly produce negative feelings as well as strong positive ones. Everyone has their favorite styles or types of music, along with those they don't like. There are individual building blocks of music. They includes notes, harmony, melody, rhythm, and so on. We will explore an important component of music. This essential ingredient will provide you with excellent beginning knowledge on how music works.
A note is the most basic building block

A great place to start is with a musical note. A musical note is comprised of four things. This includes duration, loudness, pitch, and a timbre. Duration is the length of time a note lasts. Of course, some notes last longer than others. The pitch is a key ingredient. It helps to distinguish a note from noise. Timbre has to do with distinctive sound, concerning different types of instruments. Loudness is pretty self-explanatory. A key to understanding how music works is to learn about notes.
Notes have names
With a guitar, piano, or any other instrument, the notes are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet. They are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. An important point to remember, is that between some of these letters, you will find an extra note. They are called sharps and flats. As an example, there is an extra note between C and D. It can be called either C sharp, or D flat. The sharp is one step higher than C. The flat is one step lower than D. It is the same note with a different name. This is how music works.
There is a difference between notes and noises
Throughout a day you will hear a lot of sounds, but only a few of them will actually be musical notes. Normally, musical notes are created on purpose, by way of a musical instrument. They can also by produced without a musical instrument. An example would be the ring of a doorbell. One thing is certain. It doesn't matter how musical notes are produced. They will sound different than all of the other various noises. What makes musical notes sound different from non-musical notes is a ripple pattern. Musical notes are made up of ripple patterns that repeat over and over.
In conclusion
There is a lot more to music than most people think. Learning about notes is a good place to start building a foundation of musical knowledge. It doesn't matter if someone is playing Mozart or Metallica. If they use the same chord, it will be made up of the same notes. There is also a lot of science and psychology involved, when it comes to music. A great musical education is something that will last a lifetime.
