Picks are the kind of music accessory you have to buy again and
again. Picks get lost, broken, or you want to try something else. You
want one in this room, one in that, one in this size, or maybe that size
would be better... You need loads of them. That's why people like to
buy picks in bulk.
Some people buy a puncher and punch their picks themselves whenever they need one. But then you need of course a big supply of plastic. I know someone who uses his old credit cards. Others will keep at home big supplies of the special plastic plates sold with these punches. Though the excitement of doing it yourself tends to wear off after a while, and you still need more picks.
Another problem with these picks is that they get lost. They are small, and if your pocket is torn they fall off. If you keep them in your drawer, your drawer will quickly become a mess. I know someone who uses his old glasses case as a box for the picks. A friend of mine is keeping a nice tin box he has picked up somewhere as his most precious possession, as he sees it as the best way to keep his picks.
A good solution to this problem would be having a good-sized picks box. Something that is not too small to accommodate enough picks, but also not too big so that you can find what you want in it. I don't like the tin boxes sold by some companies, since you cannot easily find in it the type you are looking for. The best box would be a compartmented box, in which you can organize you picks according to type, shape or gauge - depending on your preference, and will be big enough to contain a good size of picks, but small enough to tuck into your drawer or guitar case. A plus would be a see-through cover, so you can easily verify you have the type of pick you are looking for.
Personally, I prefer celluloid picks of medium-heavy size. Too thin picks will be broken easily, and extra-heavy ones are not flexible enough, though they are the ones usually sought after by metal or heavy-rock players. I don't play these genres. In any case, having at your disposal a big variety of picks is always a big plus. When trying a new genre, playing with a friend or whatever, it is a good practice to look for the best pick for your current needs.
